How to Use Tallow Oil: Face, Body & Hair Care Guide
Slow Body Care Movement®
A few drops. So many possibilities. A thoughtfully blended tallow oil can do far more than moisturize one area. From skin vitality and facial massage to body care and dry hair ends, a little know-how makes every drop go further.
Here you'll find practical application instructions, tips for natural texture changes, a guide to our four featured oils, and nine simple ways to make them part of your routine.

Understanding your oil
What makes our tallow oils different?
Summer Solace Tallow oils are handcrafted in Oakland, California with Regenerative Tallow® and carefully selected complementary oils and botanicals. Different blends offer different sensory experiences, from Emanations' facial focus to Everyday Pure's fragrance-free versatility and Mountain Song's and Pear Gelato's botanical body rituals.
These water-free oils help soften and condition skin, while supporting moisture retention when applied after cleansing or bathing. The amount you use, how you apply it, and the formula you choose all influence the finish.
A helpful distinction: body oil is not a replacement for water-based hydration. Applying it over skin that's slightly damp or recently misted helps lock in hydration already present.
The application ritual
How to use tallow oil in four steps
Start with a little and adjust to the formula, body area and texture you prefer. These principles work for face and body oils; follow individual product labels as well.

Step 01
Prep & shake
Start with clean skin and gently shake your bottle, particularly formulas that contain ingredients that may naturally settle. After a shower, leave skin slightly damp before applying.
Pro tip: A floral mist beneath facial oil is a lovely way to lock in hydration. Apply oil after the mist, not before.

Step 02
Dispense & warm
Begin with 2–4 drops for the face or a small amount for a larger body area. Warm the oil between clean palms or fingertips with slow, gentle movements.
Pro tip: Keep the dropper tip from touching your skin and begin with less than you think you need.
Step 03
Press & massage
Gently press into the face, neck and décolleté, or massage over arms, legs and other areas needing moisture. Use soft, unhurried strokes and allow a moment to absorb.
Pro tip: For facial massage or gua sha, apply enough oil for slip and avoid pulling on delicate skin.

Step 04
Layer & nourish
Use alone or blend 1–2 drops with a pea-sized amount of tallow balm in your palm for a softer, richer moisturizing ritual.
Pro tip: For fragrance-free layering, pair Everyday Pure with Pure Unscented Balm. For facial care, try Emanations with a balm suited to your skin.

Emanations Nourishing Face & Hair Oil
With Regenerative Tallow®, emu oil, olive-derived squalane and carefully chosen botanicals, Emanations helps moisturize dry and mature-looking skin, support a supple feel and promote a radiant-looking complexion.
Fine-line care: By moisturizing dry skin, Emanations may help soften the appearance of fine lines made more noticeable by dryness. It has not been clinically shown to prevent wrinkles.
Pro tip: Warm 2–4 drops and press into the face, neck and décolleté. For facial massage, use enough to glide without tugging.

Face • body • no added fragrance

A versatile, unscented oil for everyday moisturizing. Designed for those who prefer no added fragrance or essential oils, it suits simple face-and-body routines and pairs naturally with Pure Unscented Balm.
Pro tip: Shake well and apply on slightly damp skin after a shower. Use sparingly on the face, and add a little more for larger body areas.

Mountain Song Body & Hair Oil
Inspired by stone, root and flower, Mountain Song combines nourishing oils with an earthy-floral botanical aroma featuring gardenia, honeysuckle, vetiver and petrichor notes.
Pro tip: After bathing, massage over damp arms, legs or feet. Start with a little and let the botanical scent become part of your winding-down ritual.

Pear Gelato Body Oil
A rich yet silky body oil with pear, coconut and laurel notes. Pearl powder, non-nano zinc oxide and nourishing fats make this a distinctively luminous-feeling body ritual.

More than body oil
Nine ways to make every drop count
Our oils extend well beyond a single moisturizing step. These nine ideas help you discover your own favorite ways to use them.

01 / Face and neckline
Nourish face, neck & décolleté
Gently press 2–4 drops of Emanations onto clean, slightly damp skin and extend down the neck and upper chest.
Pro tip: A floral mist before oil can help lock in hydration. Avoid placing the dropper directly against skin.

02 / Daily ritual
Moisturize the body after bathing
Massage Everyday Pure across damp arms, legs and other areas that need a little care. Its unscented formulation makes it an easy everyday option.
Pro tip: Work while the skin is still slightly damp, before it dries completely.

03 / Body comfort
Keep arms & legs soft and supple
Warm Mountain Song in your palms and massage with slow, gentle strokes over arms and legs.
Pro tip: Let the oil settle before putting on clothing and use a little less if the skin feels slick.

04 / Finishing touch
Create a soft, pearly-looking glow
Pear Gelato leaves moisturized skin looking naturally luminous, with a lush pear-inspired aroma.
Pro tip: Shake before each use and apply sparingly over shoulders, arms or legs. This oil is not sunscreen.

05 / Facial vitality
Care for skin vitality & radiance
Emanations leaves dry or mature-looking skin feeling replenished, and moisturizing may soften the appearance of fine lines related to dryness.
Pro tip: Apply consistently, and use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ by day to help prevent premature visible skin aging.

06 / Hair finishing
Smooth dry ends & flyaways
Spread one or two drops of Emanations or Everyday Pure between your hands and smooth lightly over dry ends or stray hairs.
Pro tip: Begin with the smallest possible amount, especially for fine hair.

07 / Small spots
Nourish dry hands, nails & cuticles
Massage a tiny amount of oil around cuticles and into dry knuckles as part of daily hand care.
Pro tip: Try this after handwashing or at bedtime, when it can sit undisturbed.

08 / Hair and scalp
Enjoy a gentle scalp massage
Apply a few drops of an oil suited to your scalp, such as Emanations, and massage lightly with fingertips.
Pro tip: Use sparingly, avoid irritated skin, and shampoo afterward if you prefer.

09 / Evening ritual
Give dry areas overnight attention
Before bed, apply a light layer to dry hands, elbows or heels. For extra richness, finish with a little tallow balm.
Pro tip: Slip on breathable cotton socks or gloves if helpful, and avoid walking barefoot on slippery surfaces.
Seasonal texture care
Why your oil may change with the weather
Because these oils contain natural fats and botanical ingredients, their texture can respond to ambient temperature and some blends can naturally settle.

Cooler weather: when oil thickens
If your oil becomes cloudy or thickens in cold conditions, keep its lid tightly closed and gently warm the bottle between your hands or in comfortably warm water for a few minutes. Dry the bottle before opening.
Pro tip: Never microwave the bottle or use boiling water. Keep the dropper and contents dry.
Warmer weather & natural settling
Heat may make the formula more fluid. Store away from direct sunlight and high heat. For oils with settling ingredients, such as Pear Gelato, shake gently as directed before each use.
Pro tip: Changes in texture are not automatically a problem, but if you notice an unusual rancid odor, visible contamination or other concerning changes, discontinue use.
Care for every drop
How to store your tallow oils
- Store upright: Keep bottles on a stable surface with lids and pumps secure.
- Avoid heat and sun: Store in a cool, dry space, away from windowsills or hot cars.
- Keep dispensers clean: Avoid touching the dropper tip directly to your face or fingers.
- Shake when directed: Certain oils contain ingredients that can settle naturally.
- Follow the individual label: Check the specific bottle's freshness and use-by guidance. Published oil product pages generally recommend use within 12 months after opening.
Natural color and aroma variation can occur in small-batch formulas. A notable rancid smell or evidence of contamination is a reason to stop using the product.
Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
Should I apply my tallow oil to wet or dry skin?
Apply to clean skin. For body care, slightly damp skin after bathing helps the oil lock in hydration. For facial care, a floral mist can be a useful first step.
How much oil should I use?
Begin with about 2–4 drops for the face and a small amount for larger areas. Adjust according to the specific formula, your skin and the finish you prefer.
Can I use Emanations to reduce fine lines and wrinkles?
Moisturizing skin can soften the appearance of fine lines related to dryness and help skin look smoother and more supple. Emanations has not been clinically established to prevent or reverse wrinkles. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ remains important for preventing premature skin aging.
Which oil is best if I want no added fragrance?
Everyday Pure is formulated without added fragrance or essential oils. The natural ingredients may still have a mild inherent aroma.
Can I use these oils on hair?
Emanations, Everyday Pure and Mountain Song can be used sparingly on dry ends and flyaways. Start with a drop or two and adjust to hair texture; avoid heavy application on fine hair.
Can I layer oil with a tallow balm?
Yes. Apply a few drops to slightly damp skin, then follow with balm on drier areas, or mix 1–2 drops with a pea-sized amount of balm in your palm. Avoid mixing directly into the product jar.
Why does my oil become thick or cloudy in winter?
Some natural fats become firmer in cool conditions. Warm a tightly closed bottle gently with your hands or comfortably warm water. Do not microwave it.
Is Pear Gelato a sunscreen because it contains zinc oxide?
No SPF level should be assumed from an ingredient list alone. Pear Gelato is presented in this guide as a moisturizing body oil, not as a substitute for a tested, labeled broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen.
Can I use tallow oil every day?
Yes, if the formula agrees with your skin. Use as needed and patch-test new products, especially if you are sensitive to essential oils or fragrance.
