How to Use Tallow Balm: Application & Care Guide
Slow Body Care Movement®
Good skincare begins with a little know-how. Summer Solace balms are unwhipped, water-free, and naturally concentrated. They soften with warmth and adapt with the seasons, making the ritual a little different from applying conventional lotion.
From your first scoop to seasonal storage, this guide covers how to use your tallow balm, care for its natural texture, and discover simple ways to make the most of every jar.
Understanding your balm
What makes our tallow balms different?
At Summer Solace Tallow, we handcraft our balms in Oakland, California using Regenerative Tallow® sourced from pasture-raised Northern California cattle, alongside carefully selected ingredients. Our balms are made without added water, whipped-in air, or synthetic texture stabilizers.
That means each jar is naturally rich and concentrated. A small amount is often enough, and changes in firmness are part of working with minimally processed fats. The trick is to scoop a little, warm it between your hands, and apply to clean skin.
The application ritual
How to apply tallow balm in three steps
Once you've learned how to warm it, tallow balm is wonderfully simple to use on the face and body.

Step 01
Scoop & warm
With clean, dry fingers or a spatula, scoop out a pea- to quarter-sized amount, depending on the area you want to moisturize. Start small for the face and add only as needed for larger areas.
Pro tip: A concentrated, water-free balm goes a long way. If your skin feels too oily, begin with less next time.

Step 02
Warm & soften
Place the balm in your palm and gently rub it between your hands or fingertips. Your natural body heat softens the balm into a smooth, spreadable texture.
Because this step melts the balm rather than mixing it with water, no separate emulsifier is needed.
Pro tip: Warm completely before applying to delicate facial skin to avoid pulling or dragging.

Step 03
Press & massage
Pat or massage onto a clean face, hands, body, or any dry areas in need of extra moisturization. Apply morning or evening, whenever your skin needs more comfort.
Pro tip: Use right after bathing while skin is still slightly damp. The balm helps lock in hydration. For a more fluid application, blend a little balm with 1–2 drops of Emanations Face Oil or Everyday Pure Body Oil in your palm.

Perfect companions
Blend your balm with a nourishing oil
Prefer a softer, more fluid finish? Customize the texture of your moisturizing balm with a little facial or body oil. This makes it especially easy to spread across larger areas or incorporate into a relaxing massage ritual.
Place a pea-sized amount of balm in your palm. Add 1–2 drops of Emanations Face Oil or Everyday Pure Body Oil, then gently warm and blend with your fingertips before applying to clean skin.
Pro tip: Start with just one drop and adjust until the texture feels right. For body application, apply over slightly damp skin to help lock in hydration.
A naturally adaptable texture
Why your balm changes with the weather
Natural tallow responds to ambient temperature, much like other traditional fats. Our small-batch balms aren't whipped or held to a uniform texture with synthetic stabilizers, so seasonal shifts are normal and expected.

Cold weather: when balm becomes firm
Place the tightly closed jar in a bowl of comfortably warm water for a few minutes, or warm it between your hands. Dry the jar before opening and scoop as usual.
Pro tip: Keep water out of the balm and never microwave the jar. Avoid abrupt temperature changes to protect the glass.

Warm weather: when balm softens
Your balm may become very soft or even melt when exposed to high temperatures. Refrigerate briefly to restore a firmer consistency. If fully melted, allow it to re-solidify in the refrigerator with the lid off, as directed in our product care instructions.
Pro tip: For normal storage, keep the lid closed and the balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration isn't otherwise required.
More than a moisturizer
Nine ways to make the most of your balm
Rich in naturally occurring fatty acids, tallow balm helps soften skin and lock in hydration. From dry hands to flyaways, here are nine practical ways to bring it into your routine.
01 / Everyday care
Moisturize healed scars & stretch marks
Massage a small amount over fully healed, intact skin to help the area feel soft and supple. Moisturization may make dry skin more comfortable, but tallow hasn't been clinically shown to fade scars or stretch marks.
Pro tip: Make moisturizing part of your daily ritual; don't apply to fresh wounds or unhealed incisions.
02 / Dryness-related discomfort
Care for dry, red-looking skin
When dryness makes skin look flaky or feel tight, a thin layer of balm can soften and moisturize those areas. It isn't a treatment for persistent redness or inflammatory skin conditions.
Pro tip: Choose Pure Unscented Balm if you prefer fragrance-free skincare. Patch-test first.
03 / Moisture retention
Help skin retain moisture
Our balm's rich texture helps reduce moisture loss and keeps skin feeling more comfortable, especially after cleansing or bathing.
Pro tip: Apply over slightly damp skin or following your favorite hydrating floral mist to help lock in hydration.
04 / Head-to-toe care
Soften elbows, knees & heels
Target rough or dry areas with a comfortable layer of balm, particularly in cooler months.
Pro tip: Massage onto clean heels before bed, then wear cotton socks for an overnight moisture ritual.
05 / Small but important spots
Nourish lips, brows & cuticles
Use a tiny amount on dry cuticles, around nails, and on lips if the formula suits your skin and fragrance preferences. For brows, lightly smooth unruly hairs into place with a barely-there amount.
Pro tip: Keep a small jar by the sink for a quick cuticle-care step after handwashing.
06 / After-shave care
Moisturize after shaving
Once skin is rinsed and free of nicks, gently pat on a thin layer to keep freshly shaved skin feeling soft.
Pro tip: Thoroughly warm the balm first; avoid applying to cuts or skin that stings.
07 / Nighttime moisture
Try an overnight hand ritual
Give dry hands an extra moisturizing moment before sleep.
Pro tip: Apply a thin layer, then slip on breathable cotton gloves for the night.
08 / Hair finishing
Smooth flyaways & dry ends
Rub the smallest amount between your palms and lightly smooth it over flyaways or dry hair ends.
Pro tip: Start with less than you think you'll need, especially with fine hair, to avoid a weighed-down finish.
09 / Final touch
Create a soft, dewy finish
A little balm can give dry cheek areas a moisturized-looking sheen.
Pro tip: Press a tiny amount along cheekbones as the final step of your routine.
Longer-lasting care
How to store your tallow balm
- Keep it cool and dry: Store away from direct sunlight, radiators, and hot windowsills.
- Use dry hands: Scoop with clean, dry fingers or a spatula to avoid introducing water into the jar.
- Close between uses: Keep the lid secure during ordinary storage.
- Refrigerate only when useful: The balm is shelf-stable and doesn't require refrigeration in normal conditions.
- Enjoy it fresh: Summer Solace recommends using its tallow products within nine months of purchase and ideally within 8–12 weeks after opening; check the instructions on your specific jar.
As a natural, small-batch product, mild differences in color, scent, and surface texture may be expected. If the product develops an unusual odor or visible contamination, discontinue use.
Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
Is tallow balm supposed to feel firm?
Yes. Our unwhipped, water-free balms may be firm in cooler conditions. Warm a small amount between your fingers or gently warm the tightly closed jar in comfortably warm water.
Why does my balm feel oily?
It is a concentrated fat-based moisturizer, so you may be using more than your skin needs. Start with a pea-sized amount for your face and use more only if needed.
Can I use tallow balm on my face?
Yes, our moisturizing balms are multipurpose. Choose a formula suited to your skin's fragrance preferences and patch-test first, particularly if your skin is reactive.
Should I apply it to wet or dry skin?
Apply to clean skin. Slightly damp skin after bathing can be especially helpful because the balm helps lock in hydration. Avoid introducing water into the jar.
Does tallow balm reduce scars, redness, or stretch marks?
Tallow balm moisturizes and softens skin, including fully healed skin. There is not adequate clinical evidence that tallow itself reduces scars, prevents stretch marks, or treats persistent redness. Seek medical advice for wounds, persistent irritation, or a diagnosed skin condition.
Are these instructions for zinc balms, too?
These are general moisturizer instructions. Zinc-containing products and other specialty balms have their own application guidance. Follow the specific product label, and don't use an unrated zinc balm as a replacement for a tested broad-spectrum sunscreen.
